I’m no mum myself, but I’m lucky to have a fantastic one. That kind of mum I wish to be myself one day if I ever have kids. My mum is warm, empathetic and calm and she sure knows how to cook a delicious meal. She’s very creative and sees beauty in everything when it comes to interior design. She’s also an amateur psychologist and can easily jump into deep conversations. Biologically it’s obviously a lot thanks to her that I exist, but there are so many other reasons I feel grateful for her. When I struggle with decisions she is my sounding board. When I need comforting, there is a hug to be had and a shoulder to lean on. When I get stuck deeply in worry she helps me see things in a different perspective. And when I call her during the darkest moments of life she might not always know the right answer, but somehow she always makes life seem a little bit brighter and feel a little bit lighter.
She’s always been so present and always there when you needed someone or something. From when you were a kid and wouldn’t get along with a playmate to the teenager’s broken heart and later on into adulthood and more grown up problems. During my worst times my mum would be the only one I could really openly talk to, the only one I would let see through the facade I put on for the rest of the world. She was the one convincing me to go talk to someone and she didn’t give up until I found the right one. Everyone should have a person like that in their life, one that encourages you and lifts you up when you need it. I wouldn’t be the same person I am today if it weren’t for my mum.
Although I’ve spent so much time abroad in my adult life I’m a very family oriented person and really close with my family. We spend a lot of time together and I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful family that also is so much fun hanging out with. Despite us kids now being adults, mum remains the connecting link with her food, love and organizational skills. The ways only a mum can.
So today on Mother’s Day I would like to say a big thank you to my mum. Thank you for being in my life. I’m so grateful for being your daughter. Happy Mother’s Day!
